Ann feels like she’s in Paradise as she digs her toes into the soft, white sand and
gazes out at the ocean. She’s looked forward to this trip to South Carolina for a long time and all she wants to do is bask in the sun, resting and relaxing. She and her two young children are enjoying their time on Fripp Island with Ann’s sister, Marnie, and Marnie’s elderly friend and former neighbor, Clara Brunner, a long time resident with a vast knowledge of the island and the people who live there. At the fourth of July fireworks, Clara introduces them to newlyweds Jenny and Mark Hall and their families. But Ann’s plans for a peaceful vacation are shattered the next morning. When she goes for a solitary walk on the beach, she discovers the body of a young woman with the chain of a gold locket twisted around her neck and she immediately recognizes the locket as the one Jenny Hall was wearing the night before. Shocked and saddened, Ann is determined to try to find the killer and to see them brought to justice. She convinces Marnie and Clara to join her in conducting an investigation but, in the process, she places her own life in jeopardy.

As Jenny slipped her iPod into the pocket of her tee shirt and put on her earphones, the locket she always wore around her neck came loose and fell to the floor. She frowned as she stooped to pick it up, examined the clasp and placed it on the end table by the door. She was relieved to see that the clasp wasn’t broken. Still, she wasn’t going to take any chances. Her grandmother had given her that locket years ago. It was her most treasured possession and it had served as the “something old” for her wedding the week before. She wouldn’t wear the locket again until she had a jeweler take a look at it. Closing the sliding glass door behind her, she walked across the flagstone tiles on the patio and stepped onto the patch of grass, which led to the beach. As she stopped to stretch out her muscles, she watched the sun slowly rise over the ocean and she paused to admire the spectacular array of colors in the sky. No matter how many sunrises she saw, each one took her breath away. This was going to be another beautiful day! She turned up the volume on her iPod, took a deep breath of the salty air and began to jog the few yards to the beach, her long blonde ponytail swaying behind her. She loved listening to the fast beat of the hard rock music on her favorite station; it invigorated her. She began to hum along with the song and, the second her feet hit the packed down sand at the water’s edge, she took off running, gradually increasing her speed. When she was several yards down the beach, a squadron of pelicans flew in a tight "V" formation low across the water, temporarily blocking the sun’slight and plunging everything into sudden darkness. A shiver ran down her spine and Jenny stopped dead in her tracks.
